Abstract:A new generation of in situ measurements is revealing that the solar wind at 1 AU shows clear signatures of kinetic plasma physics.  Large pressure anisotropies, ion beams, and ion-ion and electron-ion drifts are commonly observed and suggest a role for instabilities and modifications to heating rates - energy transfer may proceed directly to kinetic scales, in addition to traditional nonlinear cascade physics.  I will describe some of these new measurements and the implications for models of solar wind generation and evolution. Finally, I will discuss the measurements planned by the Solar Probe Plus mission and describe a new mission concept ‘EDDIE’ which is dedicated to studying solar wind microphysics at 1 AU.
